Shattered Dreams for Future Fashion Stylists in 2017?
This month, the Australian Government dropped a shocking, out-of-the-blue announcement about the end of VET FEE-HELP loans in January, 2017. Leaving only a few weeks for school-leavers to enter last-chance enrolments and get a VET FEE-HELP loan to assist with course fees, it’s a sure sign that thousands of would-be Fashion Stylists will have their dreams shattered — simply because they can’t afford to pay their fees up-front.
What happens next remains to be seen, and whilst there is talk of a replacement loans scheme, it will most likely be a case of too little, too late for many. In fact, at this point, reports suggest that there will be NO government-assisted student loans for the Fashion Styling Diploma at all. This is extremely sad news for what is currently a burgeoning industry.
The administration staff at the Australian Institute of Creative Design have reported that prospective students appear heart-broken by the announcement, often withdrawing their enrolment and responding with statements such as…
“So now I’ll have to re-arrange my whole life next year.”
“This is the worst news I’ve ever had!”
“I can’t enrol now because of the changes!”
One even cried upon hearing the news.
Because dates for University course selections have already passed, students are left stranded with fewer options. Parents are also extremely stressed regarding their children’s prospects for study for next year, as well as expressing disappointment at how late in the year the Government has left the decision.
“It’s just such incredibly bad timing. If it had have been announced in July, it would have been much easier for the students to consider other options.”
—Jo Ridgen, Administration Manager
Thankfully, for those who’d love a career in fashion styling but can’t afford the fees, there is still a final opportunity to get a VET FEE-HELP loan for the full fee amount of the Fashion Styling Diploma.
The Australian Institute of Creative Design have an intake this November which is still eligible and, as enrolments must take place before November 14th this year, prospective students from Brisbane, Gold Coast and surrounds are rushing to get a place.
“I’m so excited you’re doing this.”
—Taylah (new student)
